Thousands of Minnesota school children hop on school buses every morning, but up in Grand Marais, some kids ride a little longer than usual.
The 3-hour-ride on the Gunflint Trail is said to be one of the longest routes in the state. Every morning, bus driver Steve Carlson wakes up at 3:30 a.m. to make the trip.
Twice a day, five days a week, Carlson drives a 110 mile round trip. On the trip, Carlson usually picks up eight regular riders.
At 8 a.m., after a tank of gas, Carlson drops the kids off at school, only to head home, take a nap and do it all over again when he takes the kids home in the afternoon.
Even though the routes only picks up a few kids, the Grand Marais School District said they must keep running this route, because its state law.
