St. Louis County Sheriff Ross Litman said today the inmate who died after being taken to a hospital did not request medical care until Monday morning, not Sunday as he had previously said.
Daniel Schlienz, 42, died Tuesday at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center. Schlienz was accused of shooting two people at the Cook County Courthouse on Dec. 15.
Litman said after conducting a complete administrative review and investigation, they found that Schlienz first notified staff that he was not feeling well at abuot 8 a.m. Monday. Litman said a request to assess Schlienz was submitted to Jail Health Services at 8:15 a.m., and a registered nurse met with and assessed Schlienz at about 11:15 a.m. Litman said Schlienz was treated at that time.
According to an earlier press release, jail staff called 911 at 7:49 p.m. Monday when Schlienz showed signs of medical distress. He died at the hospital on Tuesday at 8 a.m.
St. Louis County's Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Tom Uncini, conducted an autopsy and ruled the cause and manner of death as "Undetermined" at this time. He is conducting additional lab tests which could take several weeks to complete. The medical examiners office declined to comment on what those lab tests are. Authorities do not suspect foul play in the death.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been involved in the death investigation.
Sheriff Litman said he's not sure if Schlienz's illness is infectious but that no other inmates have shown similar symptoms.
Sheriff Litman said he has full faith the staff at St. Louis County will review the events completely and fairly.
The Schlienz family may also be looking for answers. The Chief Investigator in the Duluth Medical examiners office said the family is looking at a possible second autopsy. The family told the investigator they want a second opinion. The family could not be reached for confirmation.
