Remember, do not push or pile snow onto roads

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is reminding the public not to blow or put snow on or next to a public highway or street. It is actually illegal to do so, according to MnDOT.

There are many local ordinances as well as Minnesota law that prohibit the plowing, blowing, shoveling or otherwise placing of snow onto public roads or sidewalks. MnDOT says this includes the ditch and right of way area along the roads.

Snow on or near public roads can create hazards such as drainage, drifting and sight obstruction.

The violations are considered misdemeanors, but civil penalties can also apply. Especially if the home or business owner puts the snow in an area that creates a hazard, such as a slippery area, frozen rut or bump. This could cause a vehicle crash or a pedestrian to fall.

MnDOT says the civil liability can extend to both the property owner and the person who placed the snow.
