Brandon Weatherz: Warming up after today

Finally, the coldest day in the forecast is the one ahead of us! Highs will actually be above zero across the Northland today, ranging from single digits to low teens. Low temperatures fall to single digits above and below zero tonight, then temperatures rise steadily through the day Tuesday with most areas reaching near 20 for the first time in 10 days. A stretch of above average temps begins Wednesday and stays a while. We can count on the mild and more comfortable temps to linger through the weekend for New Year’s festivities.
In addition to the warming trend, the week ahead will be much quieter than we’ve seen in some time. There is a round of snow that will reach across the Canadian border after midnight tonight and fill out the Arrowhead Tuesday. Potential for 1” or more should stay north of the Iron Range. 2-3” is possible near the tip of the Arrowhead in Cook County. Amounts drop to little to nothing as you move south toward the Twin Ports and northwest Wisconsin. These areas may be grazed by light snow and ice pellets Tuesday afternoon and evening. The next opportunity for precipitation will be a mixed bag Wednesday night through Thursday night, but accumulation looks to be rather minimal right now.
