Wednesday will be a big day for Spartan hockey as both the boys and girls teams will drop the puck on their Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) semifinals.

For the girls program it will mark their first semifinal appearance since the 2014-2015 season. It’s the furthest they’ve skated in the tournament during second year head coach Doug Trentor’s six overall seasons with the team.

"It’s really neat, I mean we’ve done a lot on and off the ice to grow and to change for the better," sophomore center Autumn Cooper shared. "It’s good we’re seeing change in effort and playing."

The winter storm that postponed their match against Hayward to Wednesday allowed the Spartans to use Tuesday for make up practices and to prep for the Hurricanes, who they fell just 3-2 to in the regular season.

"The one day extra is going to help us a little bit because we lost yesterday’s practice," head coach Doug Trentor explained. "It’s nice to have one more day of work before getting out to play another game, so looking forward to tonight’s practice."

"It’s kind of helped us look back at our old games to figure out what to do better," senior defenseman Callie Holmlund said about the unexpected day off. "It’s also kind of hard not skating for a couple of days so I think after today we’ll really figure out if it helped or hurt us at all."

Puck drop Wednesday in Hayward is set for 7pm.
