For Duluth’s very own, Lake Superior Zoo, 2022 was a year of progress, prospect, renewal, and victories. Over 95,000 people interacted with the Zoo in 2022, with over 89,000 on site visitors and volunteers. At the beginning of each year, the board and its members gather for their annual meeting and review accomplishments and losses from the previous year. So what is one of the biggest priorities of 2023?
“Bringing red pandas to Duluth. That’s one of our top priorities. And we’re looking forward to also accomplishing more initiatives with our diversity, equity, accessibility and Inclusion Committee, as well as supporting the community in any way that we possibly can,” says Haley Hedstrom, Chief executive officer of Lake Superior Zoo.
In addition, Lake Superior is having some massive membership changes to make the Zoo more accessible for folks in underserved communities.
“We are revamping our membership program that offers underserved families a discount. So if you take part in WICC or free and reduced lunches, you can get a cheaper membership as well. We also donate a percentage of our tickets to events like, “Boo at the Zoo,” amongst other things, so that those families that might not be able to make it out here can come to the zoo for free, learn more about animals, and have a great time,” finishes Hedstrom.
