High school skiers headed to Giants Ridge Wednesday to compete in the Minnesota State alpine ski meet.

Duluth East senior Lauren Carlson would land on top of the podium claiming her first state title. She out-raced second place Minnehaha Academy by 35 seconds with a final time of 1:18.14.

"There’s a lot sweat and a lot of tears. Very rarely is there a time when you’re rewarded in ski racing for all that hard work, but today that happened and so I’m really grateful for that," Carlson said.

Also from Duluth East, fellow Greyhound Veronica McHenry finished in 7th with a time of 1:21.71.

In the Northland, the boy’s side was led by Greyhound Wyatt Schultz who placed 8th with a time of 1:16.85.

"The snow was solid, it held up through all 100 kids for each guys and girls," Schultz explained. "Little loose for me when I started because we prefer hard ice, then when you’re one of the first people to go it’s still a little soft but overall it was pretty good for everybody."

As teams the Duluth East girls finished fourth and the Greyhound boys fifth. The state Nordic meet concludes Thursday at Giants Ridge.
