Up in Eveleth, The Hippodrome arena has been a longstanding ice rink in the range. It’s been around for a total of 101 years, being built in 1922.
“But it doesn’t look 100 years old. It looks beautiful in here”, Says Eveleth Assistant Public Works Director Mark Karpen.
The rink is still be used by the high school boys and girls teams, youth programs, adult leagues, and more.
The Hippodrome ice schedule updates every week. You can find their schedule on the City of Eveleth page.
The Hipp’s long history continues to be a big draw for people out of town. Karpen says, “We have a lot of people from out of town, a lot of the teams from the cities that call to try to get ice time to practice up here when they’re in the area… the kids love playing here.”
The name “Hippodrome” comes from the architectural hippodrome structure. It’s a word that originated in ancient Greece, and used to be an oval arena used for horse racing.
The Hipp is even recognized by the US Hockey Hall of Fame. “The new arenas are all kind of the same thing. They don’t have the integrity of the old ones like this”, says Mark Karpen.
