Finding the right preschool and early childhood education

Parents know that finding the right preschool and early childhood education is important, but it’s not easy. That’s why Andrea Jang of Duluth Mom has resources that may be able to help.
She’s developed a guide called Preschools and Early Childhood Resources in Duluth. It’s a list of preschools to consider in the area, and she’s hoping to grow it. A

Andrea tells us that now is the time to apply, as may of them have deadlines. “It’s never to early start looking, touring and getting yourself on a waitlist even.” Most school have around March 1st deadline.

“But if you miss these deadlines, don’t be afraid to contact the school and see,” Andrea suggests.

Andrea gives 5 things to consider when choosing a preschool:

1. What type of early childhood education foundation would you like your child to have?
2. What is your budget or financial aid qualification status?
3. Which programs or schools have openings considering your budget?
4. How far do you want to commute for drop-off and pick-up? “Do you want to commute the zoo school from Lakeside?” It’s quite a trip. Another factor is your gas budget.
5. Do you need childcare before the program or after? Do they offer it?

But before you take this on, many of the schools require early childhood screening. “It’s free. It’s done through the public school district here in Duluth. It’s pretty easy to get on the schedule. Not all require it- but public preschools especially.”
