The 94th Oscar nominations were full of surprises in both satisfying and disappointing ways, but when there are only five nominees in most categories, it’s almost guaranteed that a few favorites will miss the cut.

Jane Campion’s gothic western “The Power of the Dog” led nominations to the 94th Academy Awards, where streaming services more than ever before swept over Hollywood’s top honors. Campion’s film landed a leading 12 nominations, including nods for best picture, best director and all of its top actors: Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

“Dune” followed closely behind with 10 nominations.

The AP takes a look at some of the biggest shocks and upsets, including Kristen Stewart snagging her first ever Oscar nod after missing out on several key nominations for her turn as Princess Diana, and the exclusion of Denis Villeneuve in the best directing category despite the fact that “Dune” was the second most nominated film of the bunch.

Nominations to the 94th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday by actors Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan on multiple platforms, including Oscar.com, Oscars.org, the academy’s social media accounts and on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Among the favorites going in were “Dune,” Kenneth Branagh’s black-and-white coming-of-age drama “Belfast” and Jane Campion’s gothic western “The Power of the Dog.” The Oscars will be held March 27 on ABC, WDIO-DT.
