It’s official. The joint venture between Teck Resources and PolyMet is complete, and the two will operate the mineral assets together under NewRange Copper Nickel, LLC.
NewRange Copper Nickel has its own leadership team and staff, overseen by a management committee from both Teck and PolyMet.
Tannice McCoy is the new general manager of NewRange. “I think everyone is excited to join the two teams, and leverage the experience of both and expand on it,” she told us.
Company leaders said the joint venture links the expertise, experience, and financial resources of PolyMet, Teck and Glencore to develop the NorthMet mine, as well as study the mine development of Mesaba.
The deposits are in the Duluth Complex.
Right now, NewRange is looking to hire six positions. And they plan on ramping up in the spring as well, for a recycling and salvage project in the concentrator. “ We will continue to build the team out, and increase the workforce,” McCoy said.
PolyMet remains a publicly traded company. Three of their permits continue through the litigation process.
Jobs for Minnesotans sent a statement. Here’s what Board Chair David Chura had to say:
“The joint venture announced today builds upon the Iron Range’s mining legacy and brings Minnesota another step closer to answering the global climate, humanitarian and geopolitical challenges related to sourcing the clean energy minerals the world needs. Jobs for Minnesotans looks forward to the NorthMet project’s last three permits being reinstated and beginning construction soon, as well as the further investment in the Mesaba deposit which could bring even more family-sustaining jobs to the region while also protecting the environment.”
