There is nothing better in sports than a rematch, and on Wednesday, the Section 7A girls’ hockey championship game showdown took place between the same teams as last season, Proctor/Hermantown Mirage against Duluth Marshall.
The Mirage came away with the win last year over the Hilltoppers winning 3-0, and this year both teams went looking to grab the title again.
The game was close as the Hilltoppers lead the way through the second period until the Mirage tied it up at 3 at the end of the period. Mirage went on the score two earlier goals in the third to take the lead and become back-to-back Section 7A champions, winning 5-4.
The Hilltoppers got on the board first with a goal by Nina Thorson, who also scored the Hilltoppers 4th goal with a minute left in the game. Natalie Berg notched in the first goal for the Mirage.
Mirage Head Coach Emma Stauber shared how good it was to win and watch her team battle back throughout the game. “It’s awesome, especially coming from a deficit. Marshall took the early lead, and having to battle back is just something that we talked about; our attitude is no quit and the girls proved that tonight.”
“Well, we kind of knew we came out a little bit nervous, and we were a little nervous. It was a section final game, but we all played our game, and we kept going. We were positive on the bench and in the locker room,” said senior forward Nya Sieger.
The Mirage are now on their way to play in the state tournament that starts on February 22nd.
