No. 1 Hermantown scores last second goal to beat No. 4 Hibbing/Chisholm in semifinals
The defending Section 7A boy’s hockey champions in top-seeded Hermantown went soaring into Monday night’s semifinals at AMSOIL Arena, but they would first have to get past the fourth seeded Bluejackets of Hibbing/Chisholm for another title berth.
The game was back and forth as the Hawks scored first with a goal by Sam Swenson, and then Aaron Evjen tacked on another goal in the second period to lead 2-0.
The Bluejackets saw their first goal of the night score come from AJ Lehman with ten seconds left in the second period.
In the third Christian Dickson tied the game at two for Hibbing, but with 15 seconds left in the game Aaron Evjen netted the Hawks’ game-winning goal for his second on the night.
Hermantown head coach Patrick Andrews talked with WDIO post-game and shared how he likes when his upperclassmen can go out on the ice and lead the way in big game situations. “That was super proud for me as a coach to watch a senior step up in a very big tight moment when guys are nervous and save the season.”
The Hawks (24-2-1) will be back on the ice in the Section 7A championship game on Wednesday, facing off against the Rock Ridge Wolverines (18-8-1). Puck drop is at 7 p.m. on WDIO at AMSOIL Arena.
