UMD’s Emma Soderberg named WCHA Goaltender of the Year

In less than 24 hours, No.7 ranked the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs will continue their WCHA postseason run when they face-off off against No. 1 Ohio State University Buckeyes, but before they hit the ice, Emma Soderberg racked up some major hardware.

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) named Emma Soderberg its goaltender of the year for a second time in three seasons.

Currently, she leads the NCAA with 11 shutouts in just 30 games played, averaging a shutout every 2.72 games she steps on the ice. With the honor, she becomes just the second league goaltender to earn the accolade twice in its six seasons of existence and only joining Jenny Potter as the only Bulldog to win a WCHA yearly honor twice when Potter won it in 1999-00 and 2002-03 seasons.

Soderberg was also named 2022-23 WCHA outstanding student-athlete of the year, being the sixth player in program history to receive the award and the first since Catherine Daoust won it in 2017-18. She is the second goaltender to win the award, joining two-time selection Riitta Schaublin, who won twice in 2005-06 and 2006-07.
