The Duluth Harbor’s North Pier lighthouse, an icon in Canal Park, has received a new owner. Rethos, a St. Paul based nonprofit organization that centers on the preservation of historical buildings and educating the public about historically significant locations, has agreed to receive the deed to the 113- year old lighthouse from the National Park Service.
“We have just launched our heritage tourism division,” said Rethos Executive Director Heidi Swank.
“This [the Lighthouse] is the spot where we can tell that story, we can tell the maritime story. We can tell that the residential and business story is on land. This was that nexus point between really big and important histories, not only of Minnesota but nationally. That happened on Lake Superior and in Duluth.”
The goal for Rethos is to preserve and educate the history of the area and to share it with generations to come.
