Driver dies after head-on crash on Hwy. 2 near Iron River
The Wisconsin State Patrol says road conditions were a contributing factor to a fatal crash on U.S. Highway 2 Tuesday morning.
The crash happened just before 10 a.m. on the highway east of Iron River, at Crooked Lake Road.
The Patrol says preliminary evidence indicates the driver of a westbound pickup truck lost control. The pickup crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound semi-tractor trailer.
The driver of the pickup truck, 77-year-old Anthony Richard Basley of Ashland, died at the scene of the crash. His name was released Wednesday morning and the State Patrol corrected his age on Thursday.
A 43-year-old Iron River woman who was a passenger in the pickup truck was injured and transported to a Duluth hospital. The 64-year-old Hurley man who was driving the semi-truck was also injured, but did not require transport to a hospital. Their injuries are not life-treatening.
The Bayfield County Sheriff’s Department, Iron River Fire Department, Iron River Ambulance, Iron River Police, and Ashland Fire Department assisted at the scene.
This article has been updated to change the ages of the driver and passenger in the pickup based on a correction issued by the Wisconsin State Patrol.
