Tonight will be partly cloudy with overnight lows in the twenties. Wednesday will begin dry, but precipitation chances return in the late afternoon. With highs in the upper 30s to low 40s, the precipitation type will be rain for the Twin Ports and areas south while northern Minnesota starts with mostly snow.

Rain will transition to snow Thursday morning, with freezing rain likely as that transition occurs. Snow will continue Thursday and Friday, affecting travel conditions. A breezy north wind could also cause blowing snow.

Snow accumulations will be in the 6-12” range for most of the Northland. The northwest corner of Koochiching County and areas near Brainerd will be in the 3-6” range. Portions of the Arrowhead and the South Shore, stretching from eastern Douglas County to the U.P. will likely see over a foot of snow. As lake-effect snow lasts into Saturday, the South Shore Snow Belt may have accumulations exceeding 18 inches.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, and Iron Counties. This watch will be in effect from 5 pm Thursday until 3 am Saturday. These areas are likely to experience whiteout conditions Friday as wind gusts get up to 45 mph. We could see other headlines issued as it get closer.
