Brandon Weatherz: Quieter weather to end the week

Fresh accumulation fell heavily overnight, leading to many snow covered roads for our morning commute. Rain enters the mix for lingering precipitation as we dry out from the southwest through the morning. Additional accumulation will be less than an inch for most. We look to Lake and Cook Counties where a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 1 pm for a widespread 1-3”. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect along the North Shore where as much as an additional 6” are possible locally. Winds shift out of the west behind the responsible weather system today, gusting near 25 mph and leading to patchy blowing snow.
Temperatures start off milder today in 20s and 30s. Highs reach low to upper 30s this afternoon under mostly cloudy skies. Cloud cover erodes from the west overnight into tomorrow as an approaching area of high pressure brings dry air our way. That high is responsible for a quiet and sunny stretch the rest of the week. Highs will be comfortably in mid and upper 30s tomorrow. A lack of cloud cover will allow for a cool start Friday in single digits and low teens, then a south wind develops and sends highs in the Northland into 30s and 40s.
