Bus carrying Mesabi East students involved in morning crash
A bus carrying several Mesabi East students was involved in a crash on Thursday morning in White Township. According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office the accident occured at the intersection of Palo Rd. 41 and Hwy 100 at approximately 7:24 a.m.
The Superintendent of Mesabi East schools confirmed that some students were injured in a crash this morning. Superintendent Jeff Burgess said there were some minor injuries to students.
“We are grateful for the quick response of the State Highway Patrol, Community Members, Emergency Medical Response, the East Range Police Department, and Fire Departments,” he wrote.
According to the report from the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the bus, a 70-year-old Hoyt Lakes woman, failed to stop at the intersection of Palo Road 41 and Hwy 100. A second vehicle, a truck traveling north on Hwy 100 collided with the school bus. Police say the school bus ended up in the wooded area across the intersection, striking some trees. One child suffered minor injuries during the crash.
The driver of the truck, a 53-year-old man from Makinen was air lifted by North Memorial Air for unknown injuries. The driver of the bus was treated for minor injuries.
This incident remains under investigation.
The Biwabik Ambulance, Hoyt Lake Ambulance, Hoyt Lake Fire, Lakeland Fire, Palo Fire, Palo First Responders, North Memorial Air Care, East Range Police Department, Gilbert Police Department and Minnesota State Patrol all assisted in the incident.
