Nearly 50 years ago, Father Frank Perkovich gave his first polka mass.
And 40 years ago, he and the group performed at the Vatican.
To celebrate the impact the polkas have had, Johnny Snidarich and fellow church members at Resurrection Catholic Church are working on an anniversary event.
Snidarich was there for the very first. “It was standing room only. It was great. I was only like 10 years old, but it was phenomenal. It almost felt like a rebirth when you left. Those songs were precious to the people, and Father Perk wanted to incorporate that too.”
He misses his friend. “I wish Perk was around, he’d enjoy this. The community is really looking forward to this. We’ve lost a lot of those older people.”
Saturday, May 6th, at 4pm at Resurrection Catholic Church. 301 Adams Avenue, Eveleth.
A dinner and program will follow in the social hall at 6pm. Tickets for dinner are $20 per person, and there is a limit of 200.
You can get them after mass this weekend or at the Resurrection Church during office hours.
