Learning about food allergies: The ALEIA Project

In 2020, three Duluth Area moms came together to form the ALEIA Project, which raises awareness for food allergies in the community.
Combined these founders have over 30 years of experience dealing with this topic because 5 of their 8 kids suffer from food allergies. “ALEIA is actually the initials of our kiddos that have food allergies,” Emily Homan, the president of the project, explains. She leads alongside Erica Hanson and Rose Sterling.
“Food allergies never take a day off. Everyday is about being vigilant.”
Their mission is to create awareness and provide educational resources. ALEIA is in the beginning stages of developing a teacher’s toolkit, which is being implemented first at Hermantown Schools.
It’s a binder full of information and letter templates which can go out to parents to help them with class parties and field trips.

“We’ve also been gifted books from the company called The Land of Can. These books are going to be in the library for classes to hand out.”
Their fundraiser, the Northland 5k, is coming up on Saturday, May 27 from 8 – 11 a.m. at Leif Erickson Park. You can register online or day of.
