Brandon Weatherz: Hot and muggy through the weekend
Localized fog has developed overnight near Lake Superior. This will gradually pull directly over the lake today, then creep back on land tonight and tomorrow morning. The copy-and-paste forecast of the last few days will apply again today, tomorrow and Sunday before a passing cold front finally triggers a change in the weather narrative. This means more of the hot and muggy conditions we’ve become familiar with and highs back in low 80s to low 90s for inland areas. We’ll continue to find a spread of more than 20 degrees in the Twin Ports with cooler conditions in Canal Park and warmer conditions toward Hermantown.
We look to east central Minnesota for showers this morning. The afternoon and evening will once again feature isolated showers and thunderstorms in the Northland, being most widespread in northwest Wisconsin. No severe storms are expected, but heavy downpours and small hail may impact your outdoor plans. Showers thin out once the sun goes down. High pressure nudges in from the east Saturday, keeping most of the afternoon thunderstorm chances to western parts of the Northland in north central Minnesota. A stray storm for east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin will still be possible.
By Sunday, the chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms stays mostly near and north of the Iron Range. A cold front passing Sunday night into Monday morning will bring scattered showers and a few storms. Behind this front, we’re done with the heat and humidity for now. Highs will range from low 60s to upper 70s. A breezy east wind will cool down areas surrounding Lake Superior. A dry stretch will then take us through the middle of next week, allowing fire weather concerns to return.
