The Njord vacation home is now open and striking concern about the ongoing housing crisis

What used to be Duluth’s first ever gas station is now a luxury vacation rental destination. The Njord is a three unit complex overlooking Lake Superior located right next to the Portland Malt Shop.

However, the opening of so many new short term homes is raising peoples attention as the ongoing housing crisis persists.

If you stay at a property for more than 25 days, it’s considered a long term stay. “With long term renting, we’d want to write a lease, we’d want to be very strategic with our property. We want to offer this product to as many people as possible, we want to keep it in the short term rental pool. If we’re to host anyone longer than that, then we have to take it out of the short term rental pool,” says property manager Dillion Forcier.

Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce leaders noting that having projects like this one ultimately bring is projects for longer term housing. Vice President of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce Daniel Fanning says, “for us as a chamber, you know, these kind of events, while we’re excited to celebrate the Nord and it’s gorgeous, we want people to see it. The truth is, it’s part of a larger narrative about investment in our community.

Forcier also told us they’ve already gotten a lot of positive feedback, and even hosted a couple of Minnesota Vikings. “C.J. Hamm and his brother came and stayed while C.J. had his training camp at Denfeld Highschool. It was a really unique experience.”

If you’d like to stay at the Njord, pricing is season and time of week specific. Generally during the week Forcier says you can expect to pay around $300-$400 a night and during the weekend around $500 to $600.

The Njord will be open year round. Bookings are filling up fast, so if you would like to book a stay, make sure you do it quick. They already have bookings for next summer.
