Dave Setnicker calls it a 13 year labor of love. Lost on the 4th of July was published just before the 4th of July this year.
The children’s book is based on a true series of events from 1986. “When it happened, I thought, this is a pretty good story,” he told us.
He and his family had traveled home to Biwabik from California for the 4th of July.
The family dog, named Schatzie, managed to escape and get lost for six days.
Finally, she made it back, just in time to fly home to California.
Ironically, she gets lost one more time before the end of the book.
Setnicker is happy to be back in his hometown, and showcase it in this book. “I’m really happy to talk about the rich traditions of the Iron Range, and my Slovenian heritage.”
You can find Lost on the 4th of July online and at the Bookstore at Fitger’s and the Zenith Bookstore in Duluth.
