Crews respond to medical emergency at Leif Erikson Park
The Duluth Fire Department responded for the report of a person experiencing a medical emergency at Leif Erickson Park Monday afternoon. Responders arrived and began a search and found the patient about 1000 yards east of the reported location, on the beach. The patient was initially accessed by emergency crews from the water’s edge by walking the beach. Other crews arrived from the Lakewalk below the Rose Garden by climbing down a steep 30-foot embankment. Due to the poor location, crews decided that it would be best to evacuate the patient by boat.
Duluth Fire Department Marine 19 was dispatched and quickly arrived on site. The patient was loaded onto the vessel and transported to an awaiting Mayo Clinic ambulance that was staged behind the DECC. The male patient was transported to a local hospital. He was conscious upon transport, but his overall condition is not known. It is reported that the patient did experience an illness while on the beach but did not fall from the Lakewalk.
Crews from Downtown, Lakeside and Lincoln Park responded to the incident along with Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service and the Duluth Police Department.
