What’s Brewing: Lake Superior Brewing’s own beer is back on tap

It’s been nearly four years since fans of Lake Superior Brewing have been able to sip on a fresh Kayak Kolsch. But with new owners, years of work, and a rebrand, Lake Superior Brewing beer is back on tap.

“The process has been long. It’s been three years from start to finish of buying the building to brewing beer,” co-owner Sara Maxim said. “The last three years, as you know, have been crazy. A pandemic, and that had a ripple effect on everything else that just took more time, more delays.”

As of this summer, Lake Superior Brewing has five beers on tap. Some are the traditional recipes from one of the oldest breweries in Minnesota, and others are Seth Maxim’s recipes.

“When we had this vision to purchase Lake Superior Brewing, it was really about reinventing it and making it our own but at the same time kind of preserving a lot of the legacy and the greatness that this is one of Minnesota’s oldest craft breweries,” Sara Maxim said.

“Coming back and tasting those flavors again was really kind of nice,” Seth Maxim said. “And then with my own things, it’s fun to be able to play around and develop your own recipes as well.”

The Kayak Kolsch and Sir Duluth Oatmeal Stout are two that longtime LSB lovers will remember. They also have a Hazy IPA, a West Coast IPA, and a pale ale on tap at the brewpub. An Oktoberfest was fermenting in the brewery.

Lake Superior Brewing is open from 3-10 Tuesday-Thursday and 3-11 Friday and Saturday. Because they’re a brewpub, LSB beer is only sold to drink on site or take to go in crowlers and growlers.
