Unity in Our Community giving kids confidence as they head to school

The Duluth Public School District held their second annual Unity in Our Community event at Bayfront Park.

The event started originally to help welcome students back to school in a fun way after the pandemic, but also to help them get ready in a different way. Administration says many kids go to school lacking confidence because of material items. They add that it is essential for kids to have the correct supplies sets teachers and students up for success.

Unity in Our Community’s aim is to help curb some of those anxieties kids face by offering free clothes from Maurices, as well as backpacks, books, school supplies and even free haircuts.

There was also plenty of fun for families to enjoy as well. Live music, food, bouncy houses, games and performances from local groups were all apart of the fun.

If you missed out this year, it’s okay because administration says they hope to continue the event for years to come.

Parent and employee at Raleigh Edison Elementary Mercedes Halverson says “this is something that is so needed in our community as far as the school supplies goes.” She adds that the camaraderie that students are brought to the event is necessary for a united community.
