Creating an environment to thrive in as you head back to school
Ericka Boyum of Boyum by Design is encouraging you to cut the clutter as you head to school and create an environment you can thrive in.
Kid’s bedrooms are ideally for sleeping and studying, says Ericka Boyum, “Even too many clothes can disrupt the minds and bodies of our children.” Toys can also clutter spaces.
Ericka recommends a two part process. Firsts step is for the parents to walk through the room and we would start with “Decide.” Does this object serve me? Is it broken? If not, then move on to, “Donate or Dispose.”
As for students who are required to do homework, she adds, “It’s important that you keep computers, TVs, and video games out of the bedrooms.” And rid your devices of digital clutter.
Even going to sleep should be kept simple, avoid too many colors, wall-hangings, or designs. All can keep children awake.
Everything in a room needs a home and it goes back in that spot at the end of the day.
Plus cultivate healthy night and morning rituals.
Mornings include:
- Give thanks for a new day
- Breakfast snack
- Avoid digital distractions…you too parents
- Brush your teeth
- Get dressed
- Do something with that hair
- Hug it out and remind them what a successful day at school looks like
Nights include:
- Prepare for tomorrow by laying out clothes for the next day
- Prepare backpack and outerwear, and place near the door where you exit the house from
- Brush your teeth
- Read a book
- Give thanks
- Stay consistent with bedtime on school nights
