Labor Day picnic down at Bayfront Park supporting local unions

For several decades the Duluth Labor Body hosts the annual Labor Day picnic. Thanks to volunteers, donations and union workers, the picnic is free and open to the public.

Lee Cutler, the political coordinator for the Northeast Area Labor Council, said everyone could enjoy the free music, food, and fun. “Labor Day is such a wonderful day to celebrate workers throughout the country here. But we’re really focusing on union workers here,” Cutler said.

The Labor Day picnic also featured a dunking booth where the proceeds would go towards helping children. “We are raising money for our head of the Lakes, the United Way Children’s program,” Cutler said. “We do a holiday program each year with them, and so we’re raising money for that. So some union leaders and politicians are going to be in the dunk tank doing that and really fun.”

Crowds of people could enjoy local music from bands like the Fish Heads, or eat delicious food, free of charge. “We do keep this completely free for everyone, but of course it costs some money. So unions, individuals, different groups do donate to this and we’re so grateful for,” Cutler said.

“We do have donations. We also do our 5050 raffle and everything like that. All that money just goes back into our programs, making sure this is free and welcoming for everyone outside.”
