Veteran UMD women’s hockey squad sharpening new skills for season opener

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) women’s hockey team is returning their largest senior class in program history with 12 hitting the ice this winter.

Three of those seniors in forwards Gabbie Hughes, Kylie Hanley, and Naomi Rogge, spoke on Wednesday during the Bulldogs’ media day. While it’s tough to teach what they call ‘old’ dogs new tricks, this veteran squad has been busy sharpening a number of fresh skills during the offseason.

"With an older group we can do some more detailed things and more fine tuning, rather than readjusting the systems. It’s so fun to get into that aspect of the game," Hughes said. "I think that’s where us as upperclassmen, and old ladies, are feeling that difference."

Another new aspect of their game is coming from behind the bench, with the addition of new assistant coach Laura Schuler.

UMD is set to drop the puck on the 2021-22 season with a two game series at Minnesota State University-Mankato. Game one is set for Friday at 6:01 with the series finale on Saturday at 3:01pm.
