Double fatal accident closes Highway 11-17 in Thunder Bay

A double vehicle accident closed a portion of Highway 11-17 in Thunder Bay this weekend. The Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were called to the scene on Highway 11-17 at the intersection of Highway 102 at 10:17 p.m. Saturday. The intersection is also known as Sistonen’s Corner.

According to authorities, a westbound tractor trailer driving on Highway 102 struck a pick-up truck hauling a fifth wheel trailer. The pick-up was traveling east on Highway 11-17.

A passenger in the tractor trailer, identified as Ahmed Omer, 38 was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Tractor Trailer Unit, Parmohit Chaudhary, 38 years old was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. Chaudhary later died.

Police say the four occupants of the pick-up truck were transported by multiple ambulances to a hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. A six year old child was flown to London for further evaluation.

Hwy 11-17 remained closed until 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, a detour was put in place for traffic.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation by OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators.
