Heavy wildfire smoke enters Twin Ports area; officials ask residents to keep windows closed

As the Greenwood fire continues to rage, a redirection of wind has caused the wildfire smoke to enter the Twin Ports area early Tuesday morning.

The Duluth Fire Department then issued a release advising residents to keep their windows closed as smoke is heavy in the area.

Around 4 a.m. Tuesday, the approaching weather front brought smoke from the wildfires north of Duluth to the Twin Ports area, causing smoke to be smelled heavily throughout the city.

“We received a lot of calls from people thinking that homes were on fire in their area because of just how thick the smoke was this morning,” Kate Van Daele, Public Information Officer for the City of Duluth said.

Duluth Fire advises people to avoid spending prolonged periods of time outside until the smoke clears.

"This is really something that we wanted the public to be aware of to limit their time outside and also just keep their loved ones and their pets safe by not breathing in the intense smoke that we saw this morning," Van Daele said.
