Twin Ports rallies around Lake Superior Day

With water that stretches as far as the eye can see, Lake Superior makes a lasting impression on residents and tourists of the Twin Ports.

Each year, the community comes together to celebrate its magnificence on Lake Superior Day.

This year, the Lake Superior Estuarium’s beloved celebration returned to Barker’s Island. There, many admired and learned about the lake through games and activities.

“It’s time to take a pause and gather with the community to celebrate and appreciate Lake Superior,” Luciana Ranelli, Education Coordinator said. "We’re surrounded by fresh water here which is really special."

“I’m really enjoying today. I like swimming and I also like to fish,” Gronseth said.

Dan and Kari Murto of Superior were there with their son Alex.

“It’s gorgeous down there. Good place for kids to go and play,” Dan said.

Others in attendance opportunity to try their luck at paddle boarding, which an instructor described as a combination of surfing and canoeing. Awards were distributed to winners of a paddle boarding contest.

Live music and food were also incorporated in the event.

Going forward, the Lake Superior Estuarium hopes to keep Lake Superior Great by keeping it clean, so people can enjoy its beauty and the water we get from it for years to come.

“It’s part of our everyday lives whether we think about it or not—from drinking the water, from looking at it, from it being part of people’s jobs and joy,” Ranelli said.

Lake Superior Day has been celebrated since the early 1990’s.
