Duluth native Matt Welch embarks on solo cross country cycling tour

Proctor track and field alum Matt Welch has traded his running shoes for wheels.

The 26-year-old Duluth native has embarked on a cross country solo bike tour from Seaside, Oregon to Portland, Maine.

He departed June 21st and by July 4th had made it to the edge of Washington, putting just over 200 miles behind him.

The trek will cover over 5,000 miles crossing 17 states.

Welch posted on his blog that after being let go from his job a few months ago he thought now was the perfect time to venture off.
