Sweeden Sweets visited by Governor Evers during business tour

Small businesses along Tower Avenue in Superior got a special surprise Tuesday as Governor Tony Evers paid them a visit. The

Governor visiting both businesses who received government grants and those who did not.

Evers ended his tour in Sweeden Sweets, who relied on grants to stay afloat during the heart of the pandemic.

Owner Dan Klarner says, "People, they come here and it’s an impulse buying you know. And when things are tight or you can’t get out the impulse goes away."

Now the businesses is dealing with the repercussions of inflation and a worker shortage.

Klarner says, "Before the pandemic we had ten employees that worked now we got basically one."

But Klarner stays appreciative for the help Sweeden Sweets received from the government. Saying "I Appreciate the state of Wisconsin and Superior having supported many small businesses throughout this time frame. There’s a lot of businesses that didn’t make it through the pandemic as you know, it’s sad to lose a few restaurants and businesses."

He also adds, "It’s important to have those grants available we try to do it on our own but it was nice to get a couple grants during the tough times in the years."
