Brandon Weatherz: Settling into a cold stretch
Our Friday starts with warmer temps than we’ll see for the rest of the forecast. Temps begin in low 30s north to upper 40s south. Temps struggle to rise today as colder air is introduced to the region by a blustery northwest wind, leading to highs ranging from mid-30s by International Falls to near 50 by Butternut with around 43 in the Twin Ports. We look to northern Koochiching County for slick roads this morning from light accumulation overnight. Additional snow after 5 am should be up to around an inch here. As you go south of International Falls, the commute is wet instead of slippery.
Widespread snow and rain showers exit the Northland to the northeast through the morning. Spotty flurries or snow showers may linger in north central Minnesota this afternoon into tonight. Larger inland lakes may even see lake effect snow for downwind areas. Lake effect chances on Lake Superior will mostly be east of the Northland as winds become more westerly.
Temps fall in the 20s Friday night and highs stay in the 30s on Saturday. Similarly cool conditions repeat Sunday through Tuesday with each morning featuring wind chills as low as single digits for northern communities. Be sure to dress warm for any outdoor activities, and Halloween costumes will need to work around a winter coat, hat, and gloves!
Despite the cold and bitter winds, the weekend will be rather quiet through the rest of the forecast. The only chance for a quick round of snow would sweep the Northland from northwest to southeast Monday evening into Tuesday morning with lake effect chances lingering for the South Shore on Tuesday.
