The University of Minnesota Duluth is excited about its upcoming production of the Jane Austen classic Sense and Sensibility, adapted by Kate Hamill in 2017. The show runs this Friday through Saturday, Nov. 11.

“Jane Austen’s story of indelible love between these seemingly opposite sisters is still relevant today,” says director Jenna Soleo-Shanks, UMD Assistant Professor of Theatre History. “Ultimately, it’s about love in all forms- romantic, familial, platonic- and the difficulty of staying true to oneself in a world where judgment lurks around every corner.”

The play is a period piece in the 1800s regency era, making the costume an important piece of the production. Most of the items you’ll see on stage are made by the UMD costume shop, including Senior and Costume Designer Moriah Babinski and Sophomore and Hair/Makeup Designer Emmalyn Danielson.

This year also marks a homecoming for Visiting Assistant Professor Matthew Olsen, who is a UMD Theatre Alumni himself. Olsen did the fight choreography on Sense and Sensibility. He describes the experience as, “Surreal to come back to a place that made me into the artist I am.”
