According to the Small Business Administration, women own 41.4 percent of small businesses in Minnesota and 41.7 percent in Wisconsin. And Darnyelle Jervey Harmon, author of “Move to Millions” is passionate about making sure they make the money they deserve.

“Honestly, I’m kind of tired of watching women business owners who are talented, who are brilliant, who really are doing work to change the world not make the money that matches their impact,” she said. “And so I wanted to kind of make the secret not so much of a secret anymore and put all of it in the book so that they have a guideline to follow in order to get to the $1 million mark.”

She said it’s hard to drill down to one tip, but if she had to choose, her No. 1 would be “to make sure that you have a message that is contrarian and compelling.”

“There’s a lot of noise in the marketplace, and social media is making it really hard for many of us to really stand out. So you’ve got to say something that no one else is willing to say that is very true that will get the attention of the person who does actually have the problem that you can solve that they’ve been unsuccessful at attempting to solve on their own,” Jervey Harmon said.

The No. 1 mistake she sees is undercharging, especially on the part of women business owners.

“I’m not sure what it is about women who feel like they cannot charge what they should be charging, what they deserve to earn for the solution that they’re providing,” she said. “The biggest thing I always tell women is charge more than it costs. The only way to get ahead is to experience profit at the transaction level, not just at the end of the year.”

Her advice to someone interested in adding to the 33 million small businesses in the United States is: “Start it.”

“Even if it is just a side small business to start, it has the potential to become something great. That’s my own story,” Jervey Harmon said. “I started very part time when I was in corporate America. I woke up one day and said, ‘You know what? I don’t think I was born to sit behind someone else’s desk.’ And I decided to take my part-time thing and turn it into a full-time thing.”
