Brandon Weatherz: Chilly today, light snow Sunday
Our Friday begins with wind chills a few degrees below zero for much of northern Minnesota, including Duluth. Lake effect clouds and flurries will be directed east of lakes today as winds become more westerly. This will allow the South Shore to also see the sunshine that abounds for much of the rest of the region thanks to nearby high pressure. Highs range from mid-20s to near 30. Temps fall back into teens tonight with cloud cover increasing from the south.
Saturday features mostly cloudy skies, a breezy southwest wind, and highs near freezing in the low 30s. We look west Saturday night for the arrival of snow showers. Scattered snow then sweeps the Northland on Sunday with a passing system. We clear out from the west Sunday afternoon and evening, but lake effect lingers for the South Shore into Monday morning. These areas have the best chance for 1-3″ of snow. Accumulation for the rest of the Northland will be generally a dusting to an inch.
Sunday is otherwise cloudy and blustery with winds shifting from southwest to northwest as the front passes. Highs stay in upper 20s to low 30s. Colder air moves in behind this system. Monday starts with wind chills near and below zero and tops off in low to mid-20s. Another generally quiet stretch takes us through much of next week with snow chances mostly limited to the South Shore of Lake Superior.
