Thursday was a pleasant spring-like day on the 7th of December. That warmth is still with us this morning with temperatures starting off mostly above freezing in the mid-30s. Duluth will brush close to a daily record high (45° in 1990) and warm low (35° in 1894). Areas of drizzle are possible in northern Minnesota this morning. Our Friday is otherwise mostly cloudy and breezy with a southeast wind shifting out of the southwest around 15 mph. Highs range from upper 30s to mid-40s.

Seasonably cool air returns to the region over the weekend behind a cold front that will also bring scattered snow showers and a blustery northwest wind. Snow begins in northwestern Minnesota this evening and gradually pushes east to fill out north central Minnesota overnight. Widespread snow and wintry mix showers then sweep northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin through the day Saturday. Saturday night will see lake effect chances linger along the South Shore before another dry stretch begins on Sunday.

The South Shore snowbelt may see 3-5” locally with a more widespread 1-3” reaching about as west as Ashland. Much of the rest of the region stays under an inch from this round, including the Twin Ports. We look along and west of a line from Bemidji to International Falls for 1-3”. This is the only widespread round of snow in the current forecast.

Sunday sees highs staying below freezing in mid-20s to low 30s. Monday trends a touch warmer with 30s across the board, then another cold front passes to bring flurries near the Canadian border Monday evening and knock highs back into the 20s on Tuesday. This will be followed by a more substantial warm up so that next Thursday and Friday may be similarly mild to how we end this week with more 40s.
