Wednesday the Wood City Classic, a prep basketball tournament dating back to 1974, tipped off at Cloquet Middle School.

The Cloquet boys would defeat Cromwell-Wright 80-58. Cloquet (4-4) will close out the Classic Thursday battling Pine City (1-7), who beat Mesabi East 75-55, at 6:15 p.m. Mesabi East (2-6) opens day two of the boys Classic battling Cromwell-Wright (6-1) at 2:45 p.m.

The Cloquet girls would suffer their first loss falling to Mesabi East 48-41. The Giants’ Marta Forsline led the game with 19 points. Mesabi East (6-2) next faces Cromwell-Wright (6-4), who beat Rock Ridge 69-58, Thursday at 1 p.m. Cloquet (8-1) closes out the girls Classic facing Rock Ridge (8-1) at 4:30 p.m.
