Brandon Weatherz: Mild and brighter end to the week
Our Thursday begins with the first subfreezing morning we’ve had in a full week. Given how much rain we’ve picked up lately, wet areas have turned icy. We also have frost to scrape off the windshield before hitting the road. Patchy fog lingers for some this morning, mostly north of the Iron Range. Once this clears, we finally put the gloom behind us. Clouds decrease through the day with breaks of sun and temperatures topping off comfortably in mid-30s to near 40. This is still very warm for this time of year keeping in mind Duluth’s average high of 22 ° and low of 6 ° for December 28.
Temperatures fall into teens to mid-20s tonight under partly cloudy skies. We have one more warm day Friday accompanied by abundant sunshine. Highs range from mid-30s to low 40s. A cold front passes Friday night and triggers a cooler weekend with highs staying below freezing across the Northland both Saturday and Sunday.
Scattered snow showers arrive from the north through the day Saturday and linger along the South Shore Sunday morning. Around an inch of snow is expected in the Twin Ports and across the Arrowhead with a few localized inches possible for the South Shore snowbelt. New Year’s Day will start 2024 mild and dry with 30s and sunshine.
