Prep Hockey: Duluth East edges Denfeld in OT, Hermantown upends Hibbing/Chisholm
In prep boys hockey on Tuesday, Duluth East and Hermantown earned home wins.
At the Heritage Center, Duluth East defeated Duluth Denfeld 2-1 in overtime in their first meeting since the Hunters moved up to Section 7AA. Both goals came in the final two minutes of the third period with East’s Thomas Gunderson scoring on a power play, then the Hunters’ Cory Backstrom tying it up with 31 seconds left in regulation. Garrett Olek scored the game-winner in OT for East. Greyhounds’ goalie Kole Kronstedt tallied 22 saves while Denfeld’s Connor Doyle recorded 34.
Looking at the past decade the Greyhounds now lead that rivalry series 9-1-1. Improving to 5-11-1 Duluth East next hosts Rock Ridge Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Denfeld (9-6-1) visits Warroad Friday at 7:30 p.m.
In Hermantown, the Hawks rolled past Hibbing/Chisholm 8-1. It was a rematch of their 2022-2023 Section 7A semifinal where Hermantown won 3-2 in the final seconds to advance. River Freeman recorded a hat-trick for the Hawks, en route to their eight goal victory. Hermantown faced 16 shots while the Bluejackets faced 45.
Hermantown improves to 11-3-2 and next hosts White Bear Lake Saturday at 3 p.m. Hibbing/Chisholm (10-7) next hosts North Shore Thursday at 7 p.m.
