With a new year comes new opportunities to pick up hobbies and skills, and the Duluth Folk School provides a wide range of options.

There are several beginner classes offered in January or a chance to craft as a community.

“The sky’s the limit of all the stuff that we offer,” Folk School Board Chair and Co-Founder Tim Bates said. “And really, it comes down to people discovering how to do things with their hands in collaboration with other people.”

Most of the instructors are from the Twin Ports area, Bates said. The Folk School shares the space with the Dovetail Cafe.

“A lot of times, people don’t have the opportunity to make things anymore,” Bates said. “We’ve shifted from a society that uses our hands and our heads and our whole bodies to do things – and yes, there’s still people around who do those things, but we’ve shifted to keyboard kind of people.”
