West Skyline Parkway offers spectacular views, overlooking Duluth, Superior and the St. Louis river area. But it can be dangerous for people going for a walk or biking with a speeding car driving along some of those twists and turns. Many residents have safety concerns for pedestrians and bikers who enjoy West Skyline Parkway year ’round.

Doris Malmus, a Duluth resident, said one of the safety concerns for pedestrians is constantly being on the lookout for cars.

“If you know this area, then you know you have to walk clockwise to be facing traffic,” Malmus said. “But if you’re not, or if you want to take a shortcut or come down one of these trails, you really can’t walk with traffic. It’s too dangerous.”

Malmus said one of other safety concerns is people not taking their time to drive slower along the Skyline.

“I drive this area all the time. sometimes I come past the golf course and I’m just driving the way I drive on a city street. But then when you get here, it’s not like that. This is really a recreation area,” Malmus said. “It’s not just a road anymore. You really can’t walk with traffic. It’s too dangerous. You don’t just have to glance back. You have to keep your eyes open because there’s hardly any places on this curve of Skyline Parkway where you have a sight line. “

Nicole Ottjes, a resident from piedmont, said she worries about kids who walks to school when people speed along the scenic stretch.

“I also have a kid that walks along Skyline, a different part of Skyline to get to school,” Ottjes said. “He goes to Lincoln. He said he’s seen cars lined up ready to race on that straight part of Skyline, especially since they repaved it.”

Ottjes also said she’s already sent several emails to the Duluth City Council. She hopes they can help improve the safety of pedestrians and bikers along West Skyline.

“I have a friend who just won’t walk or bike on Skyline unless it’s in the morning. If it’s in afternoon, they will never do it, he says, because it’s just too dangerous,” Ottjes said. “What we’re doing right now, it’s not working. There are two deaths this month in the same spot of Skyline. So something has to be done.”
