Superior Fire Department responds to ice rescue incident
The Superior Fire Department responded to a report of an ice fisherman who had fallen through the ice on Allouez Bay around 6:45 Friday evening.
Superior Fire Battalion Chief Robert Zimmerman said a bystander saw that the man needed help so he pushed a paddleboat out to the victim, but he too broke through the ice. Crews arrived at the scene to find both the victim and rescuer had made it into the paddle boat but were approximately 600 feet from shore.
One person was transported by Mayo Ambulance for exposure. Other agencies assisting this evening were Douglas County Dispatch, Superior Police Department, Douglas County Sherriff’s Department, Mayo Ambulance Service, WI Department of Natural Resources, and the Coast Guard.
The Superior Fire Department would like to remind everyone that due to the weather conditions, there is no safe ice in our area and residents should stay off the ice completely for their safety.
