Three different ski resorts in the U.P. are now closed for the season

Due to the lack of snow this winter, multiple ski resorts in the Upper Peninsula are done for the season.

On Friday afternoon, WhiteCap Mountains announced in their snow report that the season is over. “It’s not over, until it’s over…ok, its over. This season is a wrap,” said the daily note on the website. “Thank for all of you who made the best of an otherwise challenging season. We appreciate each and every one of you and hope to see you again next winter.”

Mt. Zion Ski Hill, a public ski hill located on Gogebic Community College’s campus in Ironwood, had a similar announcement on Sunday.

“We would like to give a big shout out to all of our employees who have worked long hours to keep the ski hill open during this very challenging season,” said the ski hill’s Facebook page. “With that being said today March 3rd will be the last day of our season. Thank you for your patience and your patronage!!!”

Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort also announced Sunday that it would be their last day of the season. The resort is looking forward to next season already.

“With snow conditions and weather becoming increasingly challenging, Big Powderhorn Mountain will be closing for the season at the end of the day today (March 3, 2024)

Another resort in the area, Snowriver Mountain Resort, is still open this season. Located in Wakefield, the resort announced on Facebook on Saturday that there will be a delayed opening on Monday.

“Snowriver will have a delayed opening on Monday, March 4th. With the warm weather on Sunday and light rain, we will allow the moisture to filter through the snow and cool down overnight before grooming,” said the operations report. “Lifts at Jackson Creek will begin turning at 10am.”
