It’s another mild March day with temps starting off in mid-20s to mid-30s. The cool down today will be felt along the shorelines of Lake Superior where a breezy east wind will hold temps in upper 30s to low 40s. Highs inland will still manage mid-40s to mid-50s looking from north to south across the Northland. It’s a dry day with more sun than clouds.

With Duluth having a normal high of 36° and low of 17° for today, temps are mild for this time of year even with lake influence. A true cool down sweeps the region through the weekend. First, Friday will be a touch warmer in the Twin Ports with a breezy west wind seeing us into mid-40s. Then Saturday knocks highs into low 30s to low 40s across the Northland and Sunday keeps most areas below freezing in 20s to low 30s.

The system that brings the colder air will also be responsible for strong winds and some precipitation. Friday’s west wind will be 10-20 mph, then Saturday’s northwest wind picks up to 20-25 mph with gusts of 40 mph. A breezy north northwest wind lingers on Sunday. We’ll see light rain move south of the Canadian border Friday evening and overnight, turning to snow in the northern Arrowhead into Saturday morning.

No snow is expected to stick in the Twin Ports. Accumulation would be under an inch across northeast Minnesota with potential for 1-2″ limited to far northern Lake County and Cook County. South Shore lake effect will begin Saturday night and continue through Sunday night with 3-6″ in the snowbelt of Iron County and Gogebic County.
