Mother and two children saved from mobile home fire
According to the City of Duluth, fire crews responded to a mobile home fire on Burger Drive Wednesday, where a woman and her two children were seen still inside the building.
The crew from Duluth Fire Department Number 10 Engine were able to break the window and rescue all three people from the home. The Mayo Clinic Ambulance then treated and transported the family to a local hospital for assessment and treatment.
As fire crews searched the home, they were able to rescue a dog and a cat but unfortunately, two other dogs had died due to smoke inhalation.
The mobile home is a total loss as the fire had extended throughout the building. Damaged is assessed at $150,000 and the American Red Cross is working with the family moving forward.
Dylan Johnson, and his family are still recovering from the loss of their home and two dogs. Johnson said his daughter is still recovering from smoke inhalation.
“They were down in Duluth and then my daughter was life flighted down to the city,” Johnson said. “She’s doing a little better now. She’s still on the ventilator.”
Johnson said his cousin’s wife helped set up a GoFundMe to help offset the medical bills and housing for the time being.
“We’re just hoping for my family to get back to 100% health and back up on our feet,” Johnson said. “We did not expect it at all. We’ve been reached out by a lot of our family members too. it’s just nice that a lot of people are there to help.”
Johnson said there will be a benefit held at the Buffalo House on Sunday April 21st. People will be able to give donations in person to help the family in their recovery.
Fire companies from Gary/New Duluth, Spirit Valley, Lincoln Park and Downtown responded to the call. Duluth Police Department and Mayo Ambulance also helped at the fire. The incident is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office.
