The system that has affected the region since Sunday will make for one for difficult travel day today. One of the main concerns is for ice accumulation, especially from I-35 to the Twin Ports and into northwest Wisconsin before 10 am. The greatest ice accumulations of 0.1″ to 0.3″ is expected in Pine County, Douglas County, and Bayfield County, which is why these areas have been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning. The Warning continues across northeast Minnesota until 7 pm and the Winter Weather Advisory for Burnett County and Ashland County is in effect for the same timeframe.

Heavy mixed precipitation will turn to snow from west to east through the morning, bringing additional accumulation of 3-6″ for much of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, Twin Ports included. A gusty wind sustained around 20 mph shifts out of the north today and may lead to a narrow band of terrain enhanced and lake enhanced snow for localized areas of Pine, Douglas, and Bayfield Co. Snowfall rates lighten up in the afternoon, but scattered snow showers will continue through the day. Snow showers may loiter overnight and through the day Wednesday, mostly north of Duluth and along the South Shore.
